OH MY GOD!
NEW YORK CITY IS AMAZING!
There are no words to describe Times Square as it is! I went there in the middle of the afternoon, I wonder how it must be at night!
The lights, the ads, the people, the hundreds of different languages passing next to you, songs comming from stores, from people playing in the streets!
You feel tremendouslt small looking up to the giant coca-cola ad or the huge musical posters all around you!
The MeM store is so big! They have everything made with MeMs characters, its truly amazing, Elvis MeM, Statue of Libberty MeM, its ridiculous, in a good, out of this world way!
I bought my tickets to watch In The Highs tomorrow, this amazing musical!!! I was going to buy them at tkts but the lines were gigantic and I figured it would be nice to have at least one musical guaranteed for tomorrow! I actually got a good deal on the ticktes, really good seats, and I paid more than 40 less on the tickets... if that makes sense!
Im really excited about this trip, and mom and my sister must be getting at the hotel at any time! CANT WAIT! ;D

NEW SEASON!!!
For my last post (for the class assignment, for I will continue the blog after that), I decided to write about something I am completely IN LOVE with. I am going to talk about DANCING, but I`m going to relate that to entertainment. May 21st is the premier of the new season of one of my favorites shows EVER!!! SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE!
I believe I am suppose to have a lot of fun with all the blogging while sharing with people whatever I believe, feel, think or like (in this case LOVE). So the fifth season starts next Thursday 8/7c. This became my favorite show for various reasons. It first appealed to me mainly because I love dancing, but also because it features amazing dancers and choreographers. It brought America to love dancing. Other show like Dancing with the starts and America`s Best Dance Crew maybe good, but they don’t feature the same variety of styles and technique. So you think you can dance has grown and it is played in a lot of countries. They also have a show in Canada and Australia, and it is always an audience favorite. For people that don’t know dancing it is still cool to see people spinning endlessly doing cool moves and wearing nice costumes, dancing to great music. For those who know a little more about dancing it is great to analyze the A la second turns followed by an attitude leap, the spotting and pointed toes, the emotion, the tricks and the passion in each dance.
The show`s approach is to take the dancer from the background and take it to the spotlight. Shows like this have been making people work harder, practice harder, and believe that some day they can be on that stage been watched and loved by millions of Americans.
So I will end this post with some of my favorite dances from so you think you can dance. Celebrating the beginning of a new season, which I pray (to Jesus, Buddha, God, anyone out there listening to me, I beg, implore, ask kindly, pretty please, make it happen…) will play in Brazil! ENJOY!

Good Omens... Heavenly or Devilish Amazing! ;D
Enough about movies right? Yeah, it is definitely not the only kind of entertainment out there. So today I decided to talk about the last book I read. I had already read once in my native language, and I read it again in English. Most certainly one of the greatest books I have ever read. Good Omens.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZeyMtwWiz18o1bU11Rsdq1xW8KXiLZEZXMx6RAFss-nHvWmXOW6Zv1g3QjNcmEsYEuhbUsFkNBWfWMYEQrovmeCgPgMxbuFO_rj3IBBkznyxfxIJhZwQ13caiJwQv5KxjC65kBQD45jnW/s320/GoodOmens_MassMarketPaperback_1185845373.jpg)
Good Omens (The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch) is a collaboration between two great writers, Neil Gaiman (Stardust, Smoke and Mirrors, Coraline among others more) and Terry Pratchett (The Bromeliad Trilogy, A Hat Full of Skies, Going Postal among others more). The book is a true master piece. Taking a fun and funny approach to the end of the world the book makes you laugh and think. We meet Aziraphale the Angel that guarded the Eastern gate of Eden and Crowley (not his real name) the demon that took a serpent`s shape to tempt Eve. They have both lived in this planet since creation, and now they are very fond of it and everyone in it. Not in the same way as we, humans, are off course. When they find out that the Devil is sending to the earth the Anti-Christ they both come to discuss if they like the idea of the world coming to an end.
With a variety of funny, honest and real characters this book takes you to an imaginary world that still sounds real to us. We meet the modern form of the four knights of the apocalypse, a chatting black nun order. A group of kids, a witch (or professional descendant as she puts it), a couple of witch hunters and more characters that make the story flow and keeps you entertained in each chapter.
I would definitely recommend this book for people who like the imaginary connection to the real. The sarcastic and comedic views of the world we inhabit. Every page is a new laughter of discover. You will not be able to drop this book from when you start, perfect for the summer. After reading this I wouldn’t be surprised if you started blaming demons for the telephone lines to not work on a Monday at lunch time. If you do read it tell me what you think about it, comment here and let me know.

If you have any suggestions on what I should write about that would be great. Have a great Mother`s Day!

May movies!!! ;D
Summer is the greatest time for movies to come out, so I decided to analyze whatever is coming out still this month. The biggest bets in Hollywood and what I personally think will be an expected surprise, an expected failure or a surprise.
In May we have:
Wolverine, Star Trek, Angels e Demons, Terminator: Salvation, Night at the Museum 2, Pixar`s Up.
Wolverine
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcDUXCFtRMEZPXB0_5cQpjiMXcaqFBd6pK6huVbzzeOZc0WC7NBXdc5AWeqfonWUCLGUaFjQSejd1uMt7lm0RIRcmys440IbOeGfTHPj58QnZigJ6p8s0mbZVIJxtiGMAkzpOL1haF9321/s320/wolverinepostersmall.jpg)
As I said before I don’t believe this will hit the highest scores in anyway. The movie has a good story, but I believe after the three amazing X-men movies, people were expecting more, more action, more connections, and more entertainment. The movie is interesting in many ways, but overflow a little on the special effects. Fox was betting a lot on this movie, I believe what may have happened was the different approach from this movie to the X-men movies. I believe Gavin Hood the director for Wolverine has a very different way of looking at an action movie, being himself also an actor and a writer. Bryan Singer (X-men, X-men 2) and Brett Ratner (X-men III) have a similar way of directing and looking at the X-men, which I believe people were expecting in this movie, and didn’t get.
Star Trek
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqHh6tzW0BkLer-31kQdc2Z46ikDPF2QugYFBu6f6pthL2U89pOeBcndIURLC_T-gY4U-iPCMyXiJVP-UBFbcoqZmL0aKC-nQg-IkIGC150JpGFkcUFYURbj8vRonHIchdo9Wbp5xtSiR1/s320/Star-Trek-Movie-2009-2.jpg)
This in my opinion will be one of the best surprises of the summer especially for Bad Robot. The company just keeps growing and growing. The movie was action packed, but with sensitive parts, hints of romance and humor. J.J Abrahams excels in this master piece that already has a sequel announced for 2011. Cannot wait, this will be one of the greatest competition of the summer.
Angels e Demons
After The Da Vince Code, a lot of fans of the movie and the books have been waiting for this. The Da Vince code in my opinion was not the best of Ron Howard, who is an amazing producer and director. I believe with the changing of some actors for this movie such as the lead women going from Audrey Tautou to the unknown but experienced Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer. The participation of super stars such as Ewan McGregor and off course Tom Hanks might help the production as well. I don’t think it will be the greatest competition, but it is a movie that will be definitely worth seeing. Ron Howard is mostly a certain bet.
Terminator: Salvation
This will most certainly be one of those that the next movies have to set their goals to defeat in the box office. Terminator is always a good bet for the summer. The movie has gathered fans for over twenty years and even people that don’t like the original movie has in a way or another started to like this endless sequel. With video games, TV shows, rumors and the past movies the audience is waiting excitingly for on more John Connor adventure. Especially now with John Connor being played by great actor, super star, women`s favorite Christian Bale. After Batman, his status has grown a lot more in this industry, and it appeals to man and women (want to be him, want him). The combination of a great lead man, excellent actresses who are also incredibly attractive, excellent director (McG), a lot of action, guns, robots and a great story can only lead into a summer blockbuster that will most definitely fill the theaters up.
Night at the Museum 2: The Battle of the Smithsonian
Appealing to a family afternoon is always a good plan. The first movie was success, which will also be expected for the second one. This time with more great actors joining the previous cast, and in another great museum, Ben Stiller comes back targeting not only for the kids but for the whole family. In my opinion it won’t be the greatest competition of the summer, but it will definitely gather a lot of money and audience. And who doesn’t like to see great historic figures come to live in a fun comedy movie?
Pixar`s Up
Oh oh. When Pixar is on the line you better open your eyes. Pixar does not take money as their first goal, and that is why their movies are always a great competition. They don’t target audiences or box offices; they target laughter, soul and fun. The company is pretty much run by artists and not executives and that is what makes every movie be on the top of the charts and a recurrent Oscar nominee and winner. This story sound sweet and funny and it also appeals to the whole family. Pixar never has a dumb pointless story. The combination of the rich image on screen and the pleasing of everyone`s imagination, this will most certainly be one of the greatest animations of the year and already had a guaranteed spot on the top ten of the summer.

TinkerBell Disney`s hiccup!
I don’t think I have mentioned it before but I am a huge fan of animations. From the first Disney movies to the latest animations I like to see every kind that is out there. My favorites are Kung-Fu Panda, Wall-E, Finding Nemo, among others from Disney/Pixar, Dreamworks and others. Disney movies have always been a part of my life, and I love animations, so I decided to watch TinkerBell the Movie. I figure that it was a Disney animation, and a Spin-off of one of my favorite Disney movies, it would be worth watching.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdXAk8pVdTe8Cz0Z7HnPo1PZmA_tGrnCdZuhfqCoQFrz8hH47kki5FxQAA4FRYJ_HP7Pj_Z_QkgGv8vdMovLxFSp7oHZtm-SUz4DY7bQKXeIhKMe-_q-J64WfSBrINYgpcMZfeiPsLF7LB/s320/tinker-bell-cover.jpg)
Disappointment. That is one word to describe what I felt after watching the movie. The animation was not at all the best that Disney can do. The movie was produced in a “money catch” spirit. It was completely obvious that they didn’t take the time and effort to do something on the Disney level. The director has done some of the Disney sequels such as Pocahontas II, Lion King 11/2 and others. The direction wasn’t the best and worst then that the writing. The script was a waste of a story. It showed us the origins of TinkerBell but that was the only interesting part, to see inside the fairy world. The script was weak and dumb, even if for a seven year old the script does not offer enough. There is no hero and there is no villain, there is also no romantic atmosphere at all, which seven years old girls (I believe the main audience for this movie) . No self-respectful children focused Disney movie has no villains and no heroes. The solution to the main problem is given in a silver tray to the audience.
Another sad part of the movie was that the cast was extremely talented. The voice of TinkerBell was dubbed by Mae Whitman, an extremely experienced and talented voice over artist. The Broadway dive Kristin Chenoweth, Disney sensation Raven-Symone, the teenage heartthrob and singer Jesse McCartney, amazing talented actresses such as Lucy Liu, Angelica Huston, Kathy Najimy, America Ferrera and more. I wish Disney had taken more time to make this movie and had taken it more seriously. I would not recommend it for someone over 3 years old.
This movie trailer does not make justice to the movie at all. When watching this you would think the movie would have more story and interesting background. A completely misleading movie trailer. Disney did have hiccup while doing this. Something that should be forgotten and put in their archives for future references of what not to do.

Live long, and Prosper! (awesome)
Everyone knows the American summer is the greatest time for movies to come out. Competition is out there, everyone in the industry waiting to see who will be the next “Big Thing”. Tonight I went to the movies to watch Wolverines imminent competition. Star Trek.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6tW8mWmY8bGToSM2gVpj4BqXB4HTFjaXFrd6gwAKdQNstBsKmaTN_MdHgM-MAWjSWduhWTYhPKZoUh9TWcsbyqgqG2ClozaJR2rVLkCfmQfKKurZPjtZQPFIlrtpCRWYTkaJPpZy4fuqi/s320/Star-Trek-Movie-2009-2.jpg)
I was never a fan of Star Trek, couldn’t care less about it. It was one of the great bets for this summer, I had to watch it. First I already appreciate J.J. Abrahams` work. Let me tell he is for sure, if not already, the next “Big Thing”. J.J. Abrahams` vision on this movie was amazing. The elements shown on screen never seemed to fail the plot line or the expectations of the viewers. The pace of the film is fantastic, being a long film it goes by pretty quickly. There is an amazing balance between serious, dramatic and action scenes, with a hint of comedy here and there, very well justified. The fights are also incredible, they look real and still involving the fiction part of it. Not only the director succeeded but the work of the screen writers, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The script was beautifully written and thoroughly analyzed. Every line has a meaning every action a purpose.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQkcHdCC8VSzuNc7P0NG0nPk3DTJZV6Fj1P0toVC8-Sv43MIICDFA7bzYAV7wqlh_JepXC94FY-Yr4YGE4E42LrutQd8tP21WK3Fv89zHilkOhtQMiE-6-lhAAEnO6EswZEsHJutle6S6n/s320/star_trek_mirror_images.jpg)
The actor also did a terrific job. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have an amazing chemistry that completely shows, we can tell those characters have a lot in common even though they don’t show it. Zachary Quinto was particularly remarkable as Spock. The chemistry between the whole cast was noticeable, I watched that movie pass by, and I actually believed they were a tower of command working together. Zoe Saldana after a couple of years out of the blockbusters comes back with an amazing characterization of Uhura. The whole tripulation of the Star Trek, cast and crew did an amazing job. Incredible movie and a certain bet for the summer. I hope J.J. Abraham continues to surprise us with his geniality and I truly expect a second movie coming from this. For someone who never cared about Star Trek I left that theater as a fan. A +!
Scotty: I like this ship! It's exciting!

Once upon a dream...
Well, remember I said I would talk about anything that had to do with entertainment well, I really am. Usually something I did, bought or like. Ever since I was little kid I liked movies, Disney movies off course were my favorites, and my favorite of them all was Sleeping Beauty. I always liked magic and this for me is the most magical of the Disney movies. I particularly loved the scene where the fairies would get their wands to work on the cake and the dress. I always have fun watching that scene, and the dark scenes were filled with mystery and suspense, such as Maleficent`s castle where her little monsters are dancing around the green fire yelling and shouting. Long story short I bought the 50th anniversary edition at Wall-mart.
First of all the DVD cover is beautiful, we have Princess Aurora and the Prince on the top the castle on the side, fairies on the other side and the dragon fight on the bottom. In the middle we read “Walt Disney Sleeping Beauty, 50th Anniversary”. A Beautiful cover, the art in it and the details are fantastic, they used a type of gloss on the cover that makes is shiny and rich looking. The movie itself continuous to be fabulous, and this time we can watch it with a digital restoration, which really makes a difference.

The bonus features are really what won me over on this platinum edition. This
edition was most definitely created for people my generation more than children. They do have a couple of games that are pretty easy and child focused. All the other bonus features are completely directed to a more adult audience. They have a “making of” between other very interesting bonus features. Sequence 8 is a very interesting small bonus about the dancing sequence where she meets the prince, it took over a year and more than ten thousand dollars to complete that sequence, it took the artists three days to complete one second. No one denies that the sequence ended up amazing. They also show deleted songs, alternate opening, and publicity. The art gallery is amazing, with drawings from various stages of the production and all characters. There is whole “documentary” about the history of the walk through attraction of sleeping beauty`s castle in Disneyland. Everything is really interesting and worth watching. If you like this movie or even grew up on it, I would definitely recommended. Something you need to have in your collection! ;D
First of all the DVD cover is beautiful, we have Princess Aurora and the Prince on the top the castle on the side, fairies on the other side and the dragon fight on the bottom. In the middle we read “Walt Disney Sleeping Beauty, 50th Anniversary”. James Logan Wolverine - It tickled (good bye Com 130)
The whole blog is changed, just one more keyword search and no more writing for the COM 130 class at Lindenwood University. Not that I don’t like that class, I actually like it a lot. As our final project we have to come up with post about subjects we like or in my case, love. There is nothing that I love more than entertainment. Entertaining and be entertained. In all forms, movies, music, television, musicals, internet, a very broad subject. So don’t expect anything to particular, whatever I did, found bought this week I will write about! Hope you guys enjoy it.
Last Thursday I went to watch Wolverine at the midnight session. Coming from Brazil it took me some getting used to with the prices for tickets. Compared to Brazil going to the movies here is really expensive, but nothing would keep me away from watching Wolverine. Me and my friends were the first ones in the theater and I couldn’t wait for the movie to start.
Spoiler Warning
Directed by Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, Rendition) and stared by Hugh Jackman, the movie comes out average. Gavin doesn’t have that much experience with action movies and we can see that in how much the story in wolverine is developed, although I don`t question his direction abilities, he is good. Hugh Jackman, once again shows us how talented he is, and how perfect he is for this part, great acting and commitment to character.
To be honest I expected a little more from the movie, although I liked it and I would watch it again. I liked the story, and the action sequences at the beginning are really exciting. Now, from when his loves dies till he goes to find Striker the movie is pointless. Good direction, good special and sound effects, but nothing really special really. Gambit was interesting, but I wish they had gone simpler with the special effects they used. This is what happens when you give too much money to a production following a success (X-men trilogy in this case). The special effects were cluttered in a few scenes instead of being spread out throughout the movie which, in my humble viewer and student opinion would have been better.
The scenes at the nuclear island are interesting, we have an interesting twist on the story and Dead Pool shows up. Ryan Reynolds has my complete and utter respect. We can tell he worked hard, and the face and eyes of Dead Pool are n extra point for this movie. We have Scott Summers/ Cyclops giving a special appearance in this movie. It made me happy that they didn’t make it as big of a fuss as I thought they would about that (please, no Cyclops spin-offs). The last fighting scene is adrenaline pumped and we see Logan and Victor working together which was really exciting. Dead Pool is not a really fun person to have fighting scenes with, him being so powerful and all, but it really worked. You get out of the theater asking for more, I do hope they come up with Wolverine II or something, let`s be honest, who doesn’t want to see Wolverine in the search of who he is?

William Stryker: You were sentenced to death for decapitating a Senior Officer. Your sentence was carried out by a firing squad at ten hundred hours. How'd that go?
Logan: It tickled.

RiFt
I was really happy that Rift came to talk in our class, I really like him, and I really liked everything he talked about. He is a really experienced and intelligent guy. I had a class with him last semester, History of Television. It was an awesome class and an amazing experience. He is a great teacher and he does really teach. He doesn’t make us memorize or have tests if we really don’t need them. I really like that he made us write and write and write. It not only help us in our writing skills, but it also makes us think and come up with some good ideas and original material. That is what his classes our about, the real world. He is more than a teacher he is a friend and a counselor. In the class sometimes we would just talk and we would have very good discussions, we learned about television in other countries and other times. It was really interesting, he talks about everything and he really has the knowledge. In the real world what really matter is being smart, well rounded and creative. With his class I learned a lot about the industry, about how everything works, not only the bright side of things but also the bad side of the industry. We watched movies and TV shows he considers (and is correct on that thought) really good and everyone should know. My favorite part was still the writing, in this industry you always have to come up with something new, and having to seat down and write a thousand word papers on a movie, a debate, or your favorite TV show, makes you open your mind to different points and views.
Do What You Love
I really enjoyed everything he said to our class on Wednesday, but my favorite was when he talked about doing what you love and what you want to do for the rest of your life. I liked that he said he changed his mind until he decided what he wanted to do. How he took everything that he went through and took advantage of that. He is an example to be followed, of someone that struggled, but still was always happy with the path he choose and keeps being the same person after everything, he keeps it real and talks about the truth and whatever he feels is right. He is a great guy that more people should know and take classes from. Oh, Rift is probably reading this, so, Hey Rift, I`m really excited to take your class next semester. Your awesome have a great summer. Rafael! ;D

NY flyover! Too close.. in more than one way...
I honestly found absolutely nothing interesting to talk about on netvibes. I went to cnn.com to look for their headlines, and they were much more interesting. I am not looking for just something fun to write. Don`t get me wrong, I just went for something else, because I actually want to care what I write about. I don`t want to write about “How Twitter is Limited”, it is really none of my interesting, I could write as many words as I would like, but they wouldn`t mean anything. I believe the point of this assignment is not just fill up space in our blogs, but find something that appeals to you and give it a review on the blog, so that is why I went to another website. It is now 10:54, I sat here in front of this computer at 9:45, this whole time, I looked for articles and even starting writing some reviews just to get it over with, but it was just killing me to write about something I believe is of no importance to me. So here we go.
NY Flyover
On Tuesday a Boeing 747 flew over NY, creating panic and confusion on people. President Obama was furious when he heard about the news. It was a miscommunication and a very bad mistake, but lets analyze this deeper than what actually happened.
This was more than just a mistake. It was being insensitive and just poking a unhealed wound. Gen – Y should remember what happened last time airplanes were flying so close to the city in New York. That was a moment in our lives that none of us can forget. Everyone that is in my age knows exactly where they were when they heard about it, saw it or felt it. It was one of the greatest moments of togetherness in history. Everyone was connected watching every second of what was going on in your TV. To do something similar like that, regardless of how many years ago it was its just something terrifically insensitive. Not only to Americans or people who suffered at the time and still do, but it was a blow to the whole world. Just for one second to think that something like that was happening again.
They say the Police knew about it all but were told to not tell anyone. This was a great fault of communication between people in power. If we can’t trust those in power to communicate among them, how are we supposed to except them to tell us anything?
Gen – Y
Our generation has a lot to learn from this “small” event, but still extremely big. We need to know that a miscommunication can lead to terrible things. Communication is the base of it all. It is what keeps the world together. With this event we can see how communication is so important to the world. We saw how important it is to keep everything clear between one another, and also we saw the same phenomenon that has happened plenty of time. The Internet started to bubble with the news. People got footage in their phones, digital cameras, and in matter of minutes the whole world knew what was going on.
Not only from the news on TV, but from the network that they are a part of. There we people putting films on Youtube, talking about it on twitter. It was something that truly made the community bubble, and one more time prove that people are connected in more ways than we can imagine. We have to keep our eyes out, for anything that pops out online. It could be your next scoop. Keep close view on every means of communications, because today is not only from the news that we get information, but also from each other.
Here is someone giving their insight about what happened:

The time to change!!! "Stop watching f****** LOST"
Gary Vaynerchuck
Gary Vaynerchuck has became very famous. He started his career by improving his family wine business using the internet. He had the amazing ability to turn his family business into a national industry leader. He started the Wine Library TV, making videos about wine, and that was a huge success. Not only he started to be a success about the wines he was selling but also because of the way he used the technology we have nowadays. He uses twitter, facebook, and all kinds of social networks to do business. He focus on personal branding, which is making your own image online, using blogs, and all kinds of websites. His idea was to have people, specially future employees, find you online, they would see what are you involved with, what you like, what are you passionate about and see all kinds of interesting things you have posted on your personal page on every kind of website. You can use twitter, linkedin, blog, web-sites, even facebook or a youtube account can show you what you can do and who you are.
Gary talks a lot about how you should work with something you are passionate about, he says, if you don`t believe in yourself, the product you are representing, the company you work for, leave. He says we only have this life and we should do something that makes us happy, and something we are passionate about. He tell people, “think about what you want to do for the rest of your lives,” he encourages people to go out there and DO IT! He says we should start doing our own thing. We can grow, and built when we believe and love whatever you work with.
Brazen Careerist
Brazen Careerist is a websites that is focused on the Gen-Ys, it is a web site for us, made by people like us. They consider themselves leaders, and have a very similar train of thought as Gary. They believe we should stand-up and do everything we think, and everything we want. We should change the world to what we want to see, to where we want to leave in. They are a community of people that encourage Gen-Ys to go out there and do what they love. They have blogs and all kinds of pages to help Gen-Ys with subjects they might need advice on, or important issues and tips. The philosophy could be put together like this: Forget about cubicles and schedules and waiting for that promotion. Go out there promote yourself.
I really likes that both of these subjects are connected in a lot of ways. It is truly a trend now, to start questioning the business world we leave in. Should we be in a job we hate? They say no. The good thing is they are realistic about it all, they don`t say you are going to start making money all of a sudden, you are not going to be a success from one day to the other. You HAVE to WORK HARD. ;D

Social Media
Social Media is a new phenomenon, people are using internet not only to post whatever they think, do or write. They are going beyond the computer surface and socializing! With web-sites like facebook, myspace, orkut, and other social websites it is really easy to find your friends. Not only can you talk to people you know, people you go to college with, and even people you went to middle school with, but you can also find people you don’t even know, but think like you, like the same things you do, or people you just think are fun or talented. You can catch up with anyone in a minute, write to people whenever you want, and the communication is becoming easier and easier. With instant messaging programs such as AIM and MSN messenger you can talk instantly to your friends no matter how far away they are, for example I always talk to my mom and dad, and all my friends and family on the computer. With a web cam and a microphone, you can have a live conversation. It is amazing.
Now things are going even further away than having a live conversation. You can record whatever you want on your camera and posted for other people to see. From honest talks to the camera to dancing, from singing to the computer to making a professional short film, you can find anything on line, sometimes something to the great mass, sometimes something that was made for a very particular group. Everything has a space on-line. Social Media is something that will become more and more important. We are taking the control away from the big companies, now we can broadcast whatever we desire. We can make a podcast and be a radio host, or have your own news show on YouTube, and write your own articles on blogs.
Here are some of my favorite videos, that other people that I have never met have posted on YouTube:
Talking about creating your own material to publicity directors from Canada, created their own short film based on a video game. Reading my monthly Brazilian movie magazine I came across an article talking about it, saying that “it is a lot better than any video game adaptation that we have seen so far on movies.”
While on-line last night I came across something that made me really interested, it said, “The World Premiere of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra.” I clicked and it was a great surprise. YouTube had a contest, they wanted musicians to upload videos on YouTube playing a new piece created for the occasion, and from all of those they would choose some that would be a part of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra. People from all over the world send in movies showing what they could play. Now the winners will meet in New York and play in Carnegie Hall. This breaks another barrier, auditions on-line. We all know that some musicians, rappers, and dancers have been discovered on YouTube. What if Movie Studios would have their own page where you could upload your auditions? Sometimes there are amazing actors, singers that simply don’t have the time or money to go audition in California or Miami. This is a new away to look at everything.
Now, should the industry be concerned about this “invasion” of regular people into their field of work? I say, no… Companies need to figure out how to use this in their advantage. Instead of being frightened go out there and join in. If you are a movie company post trailers on YouTube, if you are a publisher have a blog to write about what books are coming up, have people e-mail you, find new talent, if you are a celebrity, create your own twitter account. The Social Media is out there, and it is not going away any time soon. We have to adapt, use it to our advantage. Have Fun! The World is out there, and the doors are all open, it is up to you to go in. It might be bigger than you ever expected to be, but then again, you always want to be a part of something big! Social Media is Now!

CBS Wins With Country Music Awards
It was really funny for me to see that this was a headline, I guess we just don`t pay enough attention to the competition between networks. As a student of Communication, I feel like I should pay more attention to that, it was interesting to read this article, because it wasn’t really about the Country Music Awards, but how CBS got the best ratings that night, and how other networks just didn’t have good enough programs to keep their audiences.
When you read the article it talks a lot about what was showing on the other channels. Most of them had reruns, and no new episodes. ABC and Fox the runner-ups for bet ratings of the night had a bunch of repeats in their schedules. NBC had new episodes of its shows but for a while now it had been showing a pattern of declining ratings. The CW got the last spot that night and although had some new episodes on, apparently they were not that pleasing to the audience. I am now paying more close attention to what is going under the surface of television, what shows are on at the same time competing? Why are some shows earlier and others later? What ads are on the competing channels? There is a lot more to television then we think it does, it was nice to have an article about an award ceremony. It really wasn’t about the award show as it was for the ratings in each channel. But it is still nice to know that some people are watching it and giving it a boost into these ceremonies, because I just really like them.
Well since they were talking about the ceremony I made some research. The night belonged to the women. Amazing performances from the ladies, and some men and most of the girls were gulping all the awards of the night.
Carrie Underwood was on the media the next day for making a joke with Matthew McConaughey.
She later apologized and said she was truly embarrassed, it is one of my favorite things to listen to people`s speeches, their happiness and joy is just so real and powerful that it always makes me happy to see them winning the award. I didn’t watch this ceremony but now I wish I had.

When I looked up podcasting on Google I went into Wikipedia to get the explanation for it. It made me extremely confused. So, according to web site podcasting-tools.com in the core “Podcasting is online audio content that is delivered via an RSS feed.” So after reading that I had to figure out what RSS feed meant. Well RSS is an abbreviation for Really Simple Syndication. According to Wikipedia “RSS is a web feed format that is commonly used to publish works that are frequently updated such as blogs, news headlines, audio and film.”
I read comparisons where people would say that podcasting is a YouTube for audio. He compares both, people now can be film starts when they do something good, interesting, or that gets people attentions on YouTube. We also have blogs where people can write and be journalists, writers, poets and so. Podcasting is the opportunity for people that want to work with radio to take the stage. With podcasting you have something similar do the radio, although the most mentioned differences are that you can choose what you want to hear and when. So, it is not like podcasting is schedules. People get together and create these bits and other people if they like the kind of work you are doing will download your shows and listen to it.
The cool thing about podcasting is that everyone can do it. All you need is a camera and microphones and also a computer and connections to the web. Do not forget podcasting is not only for I-pods, it works in all kinds of mp3 and computer devices. I really don’t feel like there is more for me to talk about when this movie explains everything so well.

Radio!

I called my dad to ask him how the radio affected his life. My father will be turning fifty four in April. He said that even thought he was raised with the introduction of Television. He said radio was still a big thing when he was young. He said when he lived in the city he was born in his parents used to listen to the soap operas on the radio and he and his four siblings would sit around the radio, and play with their cars and dolls while listening to it. When he moved to the city where he lives in now he said soap operas on the radio stopped playing and were gradually substituted with black and white soap operas in the TV. Nor the TV or the radio had good children’s show, so he wouldn’t pay attention to and of them, my grandparents would still listen to a lot of music and news on the radio and now they were watching soap opera on Television. He said although the TV was starting to get big radio kept its strength especially with soccer games (soccer is a huge sport in Brazil and it brings everyone together). He said when it was the time for world cups the radio was the only way they could know what was happening in the game. It was a big party around the radio; everybody would come together and sit around it waiting for the narration of the exciting game to start. He said he wouldn’t pay much attention to the commercials, but he remembers the dark and velvety voices that would announce the shows or the products being sold in a commercial.
Television took control of the city. Everybody had a TV and radio started to make its way to the cars. He said in grandpa’s farm there was no way to get television, so my grandfather had this giant radio. About fourteen inches long and with an antenna that was about 4.9 feet long. He said when they went to the farm radio came back to being the entertainer. He said my grandfather would walk around carrying this huge thing and he was really proud of this master piece of technology. The radio was called Transglobe, and it was made by Philco.
It seems like another reality to think of people listening to soap operas and news, when today everything is on TV. I still listen to the radio, I like the music, and how every station has their own musical theme that they carry on. Now, as soon as the commercials start, I am changing to a different station. Radio is still big and it could get bigger, people working in these industries are smart. It really doesn’t matter how far technology goes, everyone will always love the feeling of getting into your car and tuning the radio to your favorite station and listening to music you like driving some place else.

Television Jobs
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_tLrYfjTRP-HhQ9OvpDLBV-4-TEEaGx9bHgBn7z3QyLeYx5ptHapjY2t0bNGsJr3JHyMvwJuETuEttG-xKPgxr-zLXo5S9EBSNvqCY83TaFKbwf_j4Y3BZmCmYIY5sI3e1O2NsBIc-1QE/s320/wkyc.jpg)
The job is at WKYC in Cleveland, OH.
The parent owner is Gannet, and it is affiliated with NBC.
What interested me about this job were the different descriptions of what I would have to do. I was not looking for reporter or meteorologist, and this one looks for a production assistant. Which I believe would be a very good way to start this career. I would have to help as a newscast floor director, which I believe would be exciting.
This wouldn’t be my first choice as a career. My first option is Musical Theater, but that is a even harder business to get in. So, when working on television I wouldn’t like to work with news. If it the only job available I would take it off course, but if I could chose, I would probably be an actor, director, producer, in a TV show, and if that is to hard I would also like to work in entertainment channels such as MTV, VH1, and especially E!. To prepare for these jobs I believe I should take all of the classes required first of all. It is very important to know how to write for these shows, or right stories on-line. Also it is very useful to know how to work with videos, editing and filming. For the job at WKYC I would definitely have to learn more about the News industry, how to work with a TelePrompTer and how to direct a news show. I would also have to learn how to write news scripts.
It is also very important to just keep watching whatever channels or shows I am interested in. Keep myself informed about this business and make a part of it as soon as possible. Through blog, tweeter, youtube and such...

Marketing to Gen Y
I wrote the words Marketing to Gen Y expecting that only a few results would turn out. I was quite wrong. A lot of people write about it, and it is more of a big deal than I actually thought it was. I think being a part of the “Millennials” makes it harder to see how difficult it is to get our attention. The first article I clicked on was the best. The article was simple and clear. Also the author said everything I always say, the “boomers” should stop whining about their own creations, and actually embrace this new, energetic, together and innovative generation.
To reach for the Gen Ys is a hard job I must agree. We don’t pay attention to outdoors or signs, most of us don’t read newspapers, not even magazines. Everything is available on-line. That is the most important place to target when thinking about this generation. Personally I still see a lot of television, and good commercials always catch my attention. In the article the author mentions the best ways to get the gen y attention and he keeps saying: stop marketing to them, talk to them.
Online
On line the greatest creation I have seen is the million dollar webpage. Alex Tew, a 21 year old student created a webpage where he would sell a pixel for a dollar, and he completed the one million pixels he had available. It is a smart and simple idea, I am not sure if it works well but still it was innovative, created by a millennial to millennials. Every website that is frequently accessed by people in our generation had a lot of ads on the side for example going to people.com at first looks like there is no signs of a ad, but just click on the main story or pictures and you will get all kinds of ad right on the side, Sprint selling products for people with “tight budgets”, Wal-Mart selling Twilights DVDs, and products you might want to buy to watch it with, Doritos, Pepsi… after that a Diet Coke ad, staring a campaign with a purpose helping foundations, Acuvue and more… every single ad, not only has a product destined to generation Y, but something else related to them; their need to help their society, their lack of money or search for a great look.
Television
On TV is not as easy to catch our attention. The commercials have to be fast paced, but still clear, it had to be colorful and fun. Most commercials that I remember include every one of these characteristics. The Pepsi commercials were a big thing, they had a lot of movement, songs they were produced like big hollywood movies so of course we couldn miss the huge stars and they aimed both for the girls:
And the boys:
Coca Cola decided to take a different path, they still went with colorful and fun, but I believe they were smarted and reached at the same time to various different generation:
In Brazil there is a teen soap opera and I have never seen so “in-your-face” commercials right in the middle of the story line. The main character suddenly stops for a second in her house to tell her friend how this new conditioner she is using is amazing. They do the same thing on shows like Big Brother and other reality shows.
Peers
One thing the author mentions is how much we value the opinion of our friends. It is very much true that we usually listen to what our friends have to say about a product before we buy it. That is what some television ads go for. They put on the screen beautiful people having a lot of fun with a group of friends and of course showing the product. There is really nothing a company can do to make people talk to one another, except following the first steps and getting at least one customer interested.
Other Medias:
I am a big fan of musicals, and I went to see Legally Blonde the Musical at The Fox theater, the Musical was specifically created to the gen y. First of it was created and sponsored by MTV, it first showing on MTV was hosted by the girls from “The Hills”. The show has a lot of different products in it. Elle Woods the character mentions Vogue and Cosmo in dialogues. When she is trying to convince the people in Harvard to admit het she sings, “… Harvard I`m the girl for you and to prove its true we all flew here on jet blue.” And everyone says “Thank you” to this one actor dressed as a jet blue pilot, then he answers “Thank you” back and leaves the stage. In one line Emmet her love interest ask her what red bull is and she says “It gives me ENERGY” and later on the show he says “I don’t know how many I`ve had but I LOVEEE it.” Among all that they still mention Calvin Klein, Chanel, Project Runway and even the Lakers and even more. It is amazing how people in marketing really go out there to get their products across in any way they can possibly find.
I could write about this for pages, but it is very late, I`m glad we can continue this talk in class. Have an amazing weekend.

Pirating!!! Bad...
Brazil/US pirating
When thinking of pirating movies and music, one of the first things that come to my mind is the difference of how a society or laws deal with it in different countries. In Brazil I have never heard of people being charged or being fined for downloading things on-line. Pirating in Brazil consist of different things than here. In Brazil the law states that it is not pirating if you are downloading something for your personal use, but if you are making profit directly or indirectly it is against the law. So that means that downloading music and burning a CD will not be acknowledged as pirating, now if you sell that CD or play it in a party without paying for the right you can be arrested. Here in the US just downloading music is a crime, and they can find out who is doing it, especially at colleges and companies or private networks.
In your face/or not
In Brazil it really astounds me how many people we can see selling pirate DVDs and CDs on the street. In the big cities it is really common to have a specific place where those people go to sell pirate products. They do it in plain sight, and when the police are coming you here all these scream and warnings, running everywhere and all of a sudden the streets where they sell their products are empty. Here in the US I have never seen or heard of such thing happening. I believe because it is such an easy thing to do, people in Brazil with lower incomes decide to go into this kind of thing just to make an extra income for their families. I believe it is something bad, but still not as bad as dealing with drug, guns and gangs. I believe that this is one of the factors that make so many things different from my country to this one, money.
The ad says:
You would never steal a car
You would never steal a purse/bag
You would never steal a movie
Buy pirate DVDs is stealing.
My point of view
In Brazil I would burn CDs all the time, downloading music and putting into my i-pod was something my friends and I would do like it was no big deal. Although I downloaded music I have never downloaded a movie or bought a pirate CD or pirate movie. I do not agree with buying these products. First my dad is a producer from an independent label. I know how hard it is for him to create a CD, the time, love, care and hard work that he puts into it. For someone to just come along and start selling that same CD for half the price is ridiculous. It is inconsiderate and stupid. For movies I believe is even more ridiculous. I love going to the movies, and if there is something I really want to see and it hasn’t come out yet I will just wait to see it in the big screen. I won’t go buy a pirate one so that I can watch on a regular TV with regular sound. Again the money has a lot to do with it. I say that because I have the money to buy a real DVD, to go to the movies or buy a CD. Other people simply don’t have the money, and while a DVD at a store can go up to twenty dollars (currency changed) people can buy pirate DVDs for as low as a dollar and fifty cents.
Surprise
I looked up some news on pirating, and it actually made me pretty scared. Here in America a girl got a fine of a hundred thousand dollars for downloading a hundred and thirty three songs. Other boys and girls that go to colleges that gave a system where they can identify who is downloading illegally also were fined. It also surprised me the amount of people in America that do illegal downloads, I thought it would be a lot less since is something that can be so expensive if you are caught. More than twenty five million people on the on-line population have already downloaded a full length movie.

Photo-Retouching
Photo retouching is something that is part of our everyday life. For me the most important impact that photo-retouching has on society is when it is used on magazines, television and movies. Everything and everyone is just perfect. When looking at a cover of a magazine you see beautiful models. But are they real? Do they actually look like that in their everyday life? Well, make-up, hair and lighting do help a lot. Sometimes photo-retouching is not even needed. I believe photo-retouching is most used when they have people showing their bodies specially women. When you see a woman in the cover of Playboy, you just see her perfect body, is it really like that?
Influences
Photo retouching has a lot of influence in what society thinks as beautiful. Some girls that are happy with their bodies may see ads where other girls apparently are skinnier. That makes our whole society change their pattern of what is beautiful. In class we wondered about what guys think about girls being photo retouched in magazines. Do their girlfriends feel bad if they are looking at someone that is in a way “prettier” or “hotter” than she is? It also works the other way around? How do you think I feel when I see girls looking at a magazine cover a guy is showing his perfectly worked out six pack? I feel horrible. I know I will never have his body, not if I work out my whole life. So even though it affects the behavior and thinking on teenage girls, and grown women it also affects what men think about themselves.
Where else?
You can find photo-retouching in pretty much everything, that delicious hamburger you see on an ad, probably has wood wax to make it shiny, the pretty brad and lettuce probably photoshoped to look perfect on that one picture. Everything can be changes. If you want to visit that beautiful place you saw on that trip magazine, you might want to think twice, because that can also be edited to look better than it actually is. The one that surprised me the most and I have never actually thought about if before was the use of photo-retouching not to help someone’s image but to do the opposite, to start gossips or maybe create a good “fake” story for a magazine.
The harsh and cold truth!
Although we all know how bad it can affect younger generations and even ours, we have to face the truth. Nobody wants to open a magazine and see ugly people in it. It is something most of us don`t like to admit, but being someone that intends going into this business we have to analyze things from a lucrative and cold way sometimes. What do you think will sell more, a magazine with a beautiful girl, perfect body, face and hair or a magazine with a large girl on the cover? If it is not your main target, you always want to go for the beautiful. Now if your target is larger people, older people, business man, then go ahead and put whoever will get their attention. That is what Dove has done. It is one of my favorite brands, and two of its commercials are really lovely, one is the one on the post right before this where they have the girls and their insecurities. That is being smart they are not only targeting their mothers, but also the future costumers the girls that watch the ad are going to be. Another one is directed to older women, so there is nothing more soothing then to put older women in the ad, but pay close attention. Yes they are old, but they still have make-up, their hair is done, they have lighting and a good camera. They are still beautiful. Society likes beautiful, everyone likes to look at people or things that please their eyes. So, I don’t blame the people that order the retouching, they are just trying to sell more, and everybody knows that money IS what makes the world goes round. It costs money to retouch pictures; it gives you more money to have pictures retouched. If it wasn’t working, believe me, we would be looking at plus size models on playboy and guys with beer guts on the cover of men’s health.

What`s Love Got to Do with It?
Falling In Love
The article I chose to talk about is “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” written by Al Ries. The article talks about how costumers fall in love with brands. It all has to do with who got to the consumers heart first. If you are the first brand to show up in that particular market such as, Coca-Cola, McDonalds, or Hellmann’s you should always try to make people fall in love with your brand. The author compares the love between a consumer and a brand and two people. When you fall in love with someone, you don`t have eyes for anyone else, you think, or you know that, that person next to you is the best at everything. Even though other people may come along being richer, more beautiful, smarter, or proving to be better in any other way and the person that is in love will not care a bit. That is how it works for the advertising industry. Being the first brand is an amazing opportunity, people will have you as reference and most will think of your brand when thinking about products in the same category. When someone is so used to drinking Coke, they will not simply decide that they don`t like it anymore and switch to Pepsi. It is very important though for brands to keep that love and also keep reminding people that they were the first ones in their lives.
Strategies to New Brands
How it works is. If you are the second brand to show up in a specific category you have two options as the author says, you can either try and show the consumer that you ate the opposite of the leading brand or try and put the leading brand down into people`s conception. It might work pretty well for some brands, like it did for Tylenol. And for a very long time this Burger has been trying (ineffectively) to pull the same with McDonalds.
My Opinion
I do believe it is important to make the consumers fall in love with your brand. But sometimes love is connected to advertising in other ways. When I read about the title I thought the article would be talking about people integrating love into their campaigns, and I actually believe that it helps. Sometimes nothing can take away that first place from the leading brand, and instead of just showing your opposite or trying to diminish the other brand in any way you might want to try different approaches to that category. My favorite example of a brand that integrated love into its campaign was Dove, instead of trying whoever was in first place in beauty and health they showed us a different side of these products. Such as in this video:
Campaigning has to be very creative to attract other people’s attention, and after they see something like this, it just wants to make you go out and buy it. Now that I think about it, I think that is one of the reasons that I always buy Dove and have fallen in love with it. It is very much true that I don’t even look at other brands of soap. Although most of its campaigns are directed to women, just to see how they treat the subject differently really makes me want to support them and their idea.
Gen-Y
This type of article is very important for whoever is trying to get into the business, and of course that most of the articles if not all of them will be important. But this is in more of a subtle way. We have to pay attention to this not only to know what we will have to create, go against and we are working. But also how things can affect our daily lives and the little choices we make when going to a supermarket. The Gen-Y is one of the greatest consumers of some products. That is why all the phone companies try to show they are cool, and some of them talk about how other companies are bad. Personally that doesn’t work for me. It does work for other people. Our generation can be very influenced by what they see on commercials. We should all have the knowledge of what is going into our minds, but also have the knowledge to know how to get into other people’s mind. Being love our bashing other brands, when we talk about our generations various things could work, it is a very complex and serious research to find what kind of alternative you should use for each generation and for each different product. I would say our generation responds more to greatness then to deepness, they would rather see a commercial full of special effects and great artists then to see some simple that might have a very important, beautiful and lovely message.
And here IS oNe of the most "love" commercial I have ever seen:

Citizen Journalism
Citizen journalism, that is the keyword, and as every keyword research we should first know, and explain who, or what we will be talking about. I could by myself at least figure out what citizen journalism was. A kind of journalism created by and for regular people. There is a lot more than that. The most interesting thing I found was the eleven layers, or steps to citizen journalism, written in a article by Steve Outing.
1 - The first step would be “opening to the public comment”. That would mean for companies and networks to let their audience comment on articles on news on-line and on the TV.
2 – The second step is called “the citizen add-on reporter”. In this second step networks use small articles, footage or advice from regular people who have something to add to a journalist’s story.
3 – Number three is called “open-source reporting”. In this step the journalist will get involved with one of his/her readers so they can collaborate into a story together, off course this reader has to be knowledgeable about that particular subject.
4 – The fourth step is the blogging phenomenon. Although a lot of people go on-line to look at “real” news and all, the majorities of hits are always of bloggers, because people want to read what other people like them have say. It is becoming more and more popular to have blogs or websites, where people write what they think, comment on news, or give the new themselves. That how the Huffington post works
5 – The “newsroom citizen ‘transparency’ blogs” works in this specific way. They are bloggers from ordinary people, but they give other ordinary people the power to be a part of it, is citizen journalism double timed. They are becoming more and more popular, some people don’t want to simply read the news, and they want to be a part of writing it, commenting and sharing it.
6 – This sixth step is one of the greater one for citizen journalism on-line, called “stand alone”, this website is usually created for a specific society, and it is written by the people in this city. The posts can be about anything that happened in the city. Subjects can be about soccer-games, the violence going on, the new playground, the new hospital that is being built, it can go very wide. That is how mymissourian.com works. But, before being posted all the text is edited by someone and then added to the website, and this makes us go one step further.
7 – Number seven would be identical to number six if it wasn’t for one difference, this “stand-alone” is unedited, that means that whatever the writers submit to posting, will be posted just the way they wrote it. This is a great responsibility to citizen journalists, because something like this has the potential to go horribly bad, and that could end up with all the credibility some citizens have acquired with time.
8 – Number eight is a combination of steps six and seven. But this time they go even further, an added a printed edition. It actually surprised me a lot that someone would be able to print a newspaper, with citizen stories. That just proves that this is a growing industry. Can we call it industry? After reading number eight a bunch of questions ran through my mind, now I wonder if this citizen journalists, are simply common people, or if writing is actually their job and this is for their free time? Do they make money out of citizen journalism? Is it easy to become one? So just because I am being posted in a newspaper or web-site I could be consider a journalist? These are questions that I hope were answered in class, it is unfortunate I couldn’t be there to talk my mouth out again. Hahaha.
9 – Number nine is a mixture, where professionals and citizen journalists work side by side. In this combination they work together, some of the citizen stories and pictures get posted, and just some of them get paid. But then again, wouldn’t people who have their stories and pictures posted be now professionals, or at least free-lancers?
10 – Number ten is like number nine, but they would work even more together. While in number nine, is a professional company, that takes some of citizen journalism, this would be a true mix of those and they would be truly side by side, and one story above the other.
11- For last is the “wiki-journalism”, where the citizens take even more parts in the whole thing, now they are not only the writers but also the editors. It is a very complex thing to understand. Even while reading I was confused how will we end up differentiating professionals from citizens?
This is all really interesting and I will be even more excited trying to look for good thing to write about and see if I can be posted somewhere. Who knows?

This information is top security. When you have read it, destroy yourself. (McLuhan)
Well, when researching for Marshall Mchulan on Google, the first web-site that they show is Marshall’s official website, there was no better way to find out who he was then looking at his official web-site. I hate to feel ignorant and to actually be ignorant regarding some issues. I did not know who he was. I didn’t even know that he was dead. =P
Marshall McLuhan
Marshal was Canadian he was born in 1911 and passed away in 1980. He was a very well educated man that taught in various different Universities. He graduated from the University of Manitoba and University of Cambridge where he also got his second Masters Degree and Ph.D. When a student, McLuhan said he would never become an academic, and that he was learning besides his master, and that he would be an English professor beside himself. In his first job, although his students were not that much younger he noticed a difference. They belonged to different generations. McLuhan decided to research what created that difference. Already pointing towards media at Cambridge he leaned even more to media and media analysis at his teaching job. He then found out that media and new technologies affected the new generations.
Marshal coined famous sayings and expressions such as “the medium is the message” and “global village”. McLuhan believed that the medium that is present in a certain time will affect society in different ways. With the first sentence, he means that we should be paying attention not only to what is being said and showed by the media, but the medium itself. So, by his point of view, what affects our society today wouldn’t be what we get over our cell phones, or what we look up on-line in our computers or phones, but the telephone and the computer itself. The convergence of the two of them is what affect society not what else they will be able to check or do on that. The expression Global Village pretty much defines what we are today, the whole world communicating in fast speed no matter the distance, the time difference, or where you are. He meant that the world as big as it is would adopted the same organization as a village where everybody knows about everyone`s life and here all the news instantly as it is happening.
Researching other blogs and looking at what they say about McLuhan I found mostly his words being cited by other people. One boy in particular was mentioning McLuhan amazing “premonitions” that he had about the world`s evolution, technology wise. He was astounded that someone in the sixties would have such good a guesses, theories, and studies about something that would happen years and years later.
I would like to finalize this post analyzing some of McLuhan quotations:
"The story of modern America begins with the discovery of the white man by
The Indians."
I think it is really interesting to see someone taking that view to the other side. It is not a very original sentence, but it is interesting to see that he though this way because probably that really affected the way he saw and analyzed anything else.
"Only puny secrets need protection. Big discoveries are protected by public
incredulity."
This was definitely my favorite quotation. It is something I had never thought about it before, and if you pay attention is the most complete truth. Area 51 was the first subject that popped into my head, because I believe it follows exactly what he said.
"Food for the mind is like food for the body: the inputs are never the same as the outputs."
I just found this saying really funny, although very much true. By his quotations we can see how much of a fascinating person he was, he truly looked at everything from different angles.
"Tomorrow is our permanent address."

Award Shows: Special, but Not All That Special
Award Shows: Special, but Not All That Special
The article talks about how the ratings for all the awards shows, including movies, TV and music, have been going down in while. They compare the ratings from 2008 2009 to others from years past. They mention that the medium age of the viewers are becoming higher, and how younger generations don’t like to watch those kinds of shows anymore. The prices to air a commercial on the time of these shows have been going down from year to year. Other than these reasons the article also gives others possible causes for this to be happening. They say that the shows are running too long and that if people watch it because of who won, what were they wearing and what did they say, they can find it all on-line. Even for music shows you could probably download the songs that were performed live on stage.
I love it!
This article caught my attention because I belong to the small percentage of people in my generation that really enjoy and love watching these kinds of show. I watch it for all different kinds of reasons. Yes, I want to see what people are wearing, the choice of the dress is a tremendous marketing tool for an actress and it should be very carefully decided by the actress itself and her P.R. I also like to know and who wins, to lose or win a Academy Award can change careers, who doesn’t remember Adrien Brody kissing Halle Berry, Roberto Benigni going crasy or Whoppy Goldberg making fun of Bjorks dress? Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s career really began after his first Academy Award win in 2006, and Marisa’s Tomei career went downhill after she didn’t win in 2002. But it is all really different for me, because I am in love with the movie industry. Waiting for the names of the winner to be announced makes me anxious like when someone is running for a touchdown. I get really happy when the ones I wanted to win actually do, and I know how to appreciate when another very good nominee wins instead. I watch it because I dream of some day being there. Nothing can compare to watching the emotion and excitement of the nominees live. At least for me is not the same.
Why care?
Current and future media professionals should care about this issue because of various reasons. If you want to be a PR there is nothing better in your clients’ career then being nominated to an award no matter if he or she is a musician, writer or actor. If you are in the movie, music industry yourself there is nothing like being nominated to one of these awards shows. It could be the highlight of your career, being appreciated by the industry you work with is amazing, and even if you are not in music or movie industries. There are awards for the whole media business, books, news, internet, advertisement, newspaper, television, musicals. If you work in the advertisement industry you should know where to announce your product. Is one of the awards shows watched by your primary consumer group? It is all involved, in an award show all types of media come together. The television shows being awarded or the network who is transmitting the show, the movies that are nominated, the PRs worrying about the red carpet, the songs in that movie, or the musicians and songs being nominated, the commercials on each break, the access on websites that covered that event on that same day or the next one, the news on TV and newspaper, the gossip and scoops on the magazines. We should all be connected and paying attention because some day, you will, or I will (hopefully) be a part of it all!
Well if you have never seen or just don't remember here are the moments I mentioned:
Roberto Benigni
Adrien Brody
And here is one of my favorite Grammy Performances ever:
Hope you guys like it!
