The other day I stopped at blockbuster, which from now on I will only go in special occasions since I paid about 5 dollars a movie. Red Box Go! I got three movies Ugly Truth which was actually a pretty funny romantic comedy, Ninja, which by the way is not Ninja Assassins (soo angry! Haha), and Zombieland. Zombieland was released in 2009, Directed by Ruben Fleischer the movie is a great mixture of Comedy and Horror.
The story tells of a future world where everyone has turned into Zombies and only a few survived. We follow Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock (fake names the characters use not to get emotionally attached to each other) into a drive around the US, each one of them has their own plan and thinks they know what they are doing. Between the main character being attacked by his hot (zombie) neighbor and an amusement park filled with zombie we have all sort of moments. Really funny moments where we see the characters have fun around a deserted world, a lot of suspense where we got tense while we see them being attacked and close to being bitten. The director was not stingy with blood and really creepy and disgusting effects, which was good and made the whole zombie epidemic situation actually look real. Overall it is a very funny movie, nice to watch with your friends, we got really connected to the character and it was fun to watch America completely deserted. The harmony between moments of stress and comedy or even romance was really well handled. A great marriage between movies genres, and as soon as it is out on red box, I will be watching it again. ;D

Precious...?

Every Wednesday afternoon, I have what I like to call “Rafael Weekly Time”. Basically I go to the movies by myself and watch something. I find it extremely relaxing, to be by yourself, and be pulled into a different world, different lives. You can forget about homework, drama, rehearsals and just focus on what is happening on the screen.
Well, this Wednesday I watched “Precious”, one of the most talked about movies of the season. Precious tells the story of an overweight black teenage girl that goes through a lot of problems in her life. We follow her struggle with her mother, school, pregnancy and a lot more problems. We also follow her trying to figure out solutions for all of it.
I feel like the movie wasn't as dramatic as I though it would be, which it isn't necessarily bad, but also it was't as remarkable as I was expecting it to be. Every movie with a great dramatic story is always more acclaimed than anything else, sometimes people talk about so much you go in expecting to see the next genius work of art in the movie industry. The acting in the movie was of excellent quality, Mo’Nique the actress playing Precious’ mom Mary really stands out , her final monologue is heart breaking when we see a women with obvious psychological issues that were never solved admit to the harms and mistakes. It is a complex and thick part, and I do applaud and agree with every nomination and award received. (Her acceptance speech for the Golden Globe was beautiful). Gabourey Sidibe is also outstanding as the main character, but I do believe that playing a dramatic role and being seen as the underdog plays a big part on all the praising she’s being getting. Alicia Keys an Mariah Carey which in most cases I would expect a mediocre performance, actually really surprised me, they took the role with the simplicity that it is suppose to be taken, they were real and raw, their parts were small but personally I believe a big a part of the story.
Lee Daniels' directing of the movie is also really good. The moments when Precious is fantasizing a new life are very well put together, transitions worked very smoothly and photography and lights were also very well done. Let’s see if the “underdog” movie will win any of its six nominations for the Academy award, the competition is tough, but we might be surprised. It might not be the best movie of the year, but it is a nice and strong movie, worth watching and thinking about. ;D
If you would like for me to comment on any particular movies, please comment and let me know. ;D Have a great weekend…

Entertainment is closer than you think
Sometimes you think that to find some quality entertainment option you have to go to other places. Yes, it is a lot of fun to go to the movies, go to the theater, watch dance performances from great companies, travel, watch musicals and all. Sometimes you just don’t have the time or money to go around doing everything you feel like.
For a college student it is hard to go out and spend money on “superficial” things, such as movies and outside performance, but you really don’t have to go so far. We have really great performances at Lindenwood. Our theater department is currently working on two productions, the musical Anything Goes, February 25th,26th and 27th and March 4th,5th and 6th in the Bezemes Family Theater. We are also working on the Shakespearian play Twelfth night that will be performed in the Emerson Black Box Theater on February 18th, 19th and the 20th. There are a lot of talented students here, and as students or faculty/staff here you get two free tickets for our student shows. For more informartion on our theater productions, student and professioanls visit LindenwoodCenter.com and check out our schedule.
We also have a very good dance program. This semester the Spring Dance Concert is choreographed only by students, including myself. I believe this Dance Concert will be really good, we also have a lot of talented dancers and choreographers. Besides these programs Lindenwood has a three time National Champion Dance Team, Lion Line is present in most of our big sporting events, and they never fail to amaze me and have the audience clapping excitingly. Here are some videos of these amazing girls, some of them will also be participating on the dance concert this semester, hope to see you guys in any of our theater/dance/arts events.
Have a great weekend! ;D;D

Airplane Watchings!
Some people are scared of death to go on an airplane. Some people simply don’t like it. Well, I never had a problem with it, and especially now that I study in the US, being in airplane is second nature to me. I got used to the guy next to me snoring, to the food, to the small space for my legs and arms. I won’t say it is the most comfortable trip ever. Airline companies try everything to make you more comfortable, and there is one thing that makes my nine hour flight go faster and makes me pay attention to something else other than all the people around, and the high we are at. Whoever had the idea of the TVs inside the airplane should win some sort of award. Those TVs are really what save me in the airplane, they give you so many different options of movies, TV shows, games, music, that I almost feel bad about falling asleep, it’s like wasting money. Anyway, putting together the “problems” of flying with one of the most popular entertainment “solutions” was truly smart.
On my last trip coming back here for the Spring semester I had the chance to watch episodes of 30 rock, which is always nice, and honestly one of the best comedic TV shows out there, Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin are a perfect pair, and all the cast just works really well together, using the sarcastic humor balanced with some in your face crude jokes that fit so perfectly the entertainment business portrayed on the show.
I also got to watch episodes from The Office, again one of my personal favorites. The light environment and the reality show vibe presented by the cast is a awaited for break from all the other hyper, colorful TV shows. Steve Carrel is a comedy genius, he makes his character so real and genuine that you are really sucked in into the office where the most strange, weird and extremely average people work at. I have never watched the original version, but while writing about this I remembered of a video I watched a while ago:
The Office Original?!?!
That’s it for now… I will continue my airplane “watchings” on the next post… hahaha… Have a great week everyone! ;D
Entertain!!! ;D
